The latest domain name sales fraud – Trademarks - Most domain name investors are familiar with the domain name appraisal scam. You get an e-mail from someone interested in buying your domain. When you agree to a price, they ask you to get an appraisal from a particular company so they can be sure of the value. The “buyer” is actually associated with the appraisal company and he is just trying to get you to buy an appraisal. See Anatomy of a domain name appraisal scam for details if you are unfamiliar with ... read more ...

Ethos.com sells for $27,778 during Afternic - Ethos.com sold for $27,778 today on Afternic. My guess is that this domain has been picked up by Ethos Water, which was recently purchased by Starbucks. Ethos Water supports bringing clean water to the masses. But they only donate a nickel to the cause for each bottle sold. If you’ve ever purchased bottled water at Starbucks you know that five cents isn’t a big percentage. If they contributed five cents per bottle to their domain name fund, it would take ... read more ...

Korean justice manners in preference of HP - A South Korean man took his case to court when an arbitration panel ruled in August 2000 that he should hand the domain HPweb.com over to computer giant HP. It took a long time and appeals through a number of courts, but the South Korean court system ultimately ruled that HP should own the domain. This brings up a big issue and thorn in the side of trademark owners: If a UDRP finds in favor of the trademark holder, how can the trademark owner be sure to get the domain ... read more ...

France’s .FR prolongation to open to individuals - France’s .FR domain name extension is currently only available to companies and trademark holders in France. That will change by next summer when the extension is opened to registration for all residents of France. The .FR registry currently has about 400,000 registered domains. You can read an interview with a manager at the AFNIC registry, which manages .FR, here. Perhaps in a few years the .FR domain will open up to companies and people outside of France, ... read more ...

Domain Name Resources: URLTrends - There are hundreds of free tools for domain name owners to analyze domain names. URLtrends.com is a great tool that I’ve been using recently, and it has been integrated into Sedo’s domain listings. URLtrends aggregates a number of statistics about domain names and web sites. This makes it easy to evaluate domain names you want to purchase. For example, you can see URLTrend’s report about DomainNameWire.com here. Among the statistics shown: PageRank: 3/10 Alexa ... read more ...

Refinance.com sells for $706,850 - DNJournal.com has reported that Refinance.com sold for $706,850 at Moniker last week! I wonder how this negotiation went. Usually when you get to that high of a dollar amount you don’t bicker about $100s and $50s, but in this case it looks like some sort of middle ground was reached. Regardless, this is a stellar domain name and a huge lift for the already roaring domain name market. But Refinance.com is just the tip of the iceberg. Moniker.com moved Refinance.com ... read more ...

.Pro domain names attract buyers - Until recently .Pro domain names were rare and attracted little buyer activity. This was because of strict requirements for registering these domains, such as showing a license to practice in a particular field (e.g. doctor, lawyer). But the .Pro registry found a loophole in its contract with ICANN that let it offer domains more liberally. One of Domain Name Wire’s readers, Michael Silver, reports that he is seeing sales activity for his .Pro domains. He just ... read more ...

iPodVideo.com Lands on eBay - On October 12th I wrote about Apple missing out on registering all extensions of iPodVideo and VideoiPod (see All Video iPod domains registered). The owner of iPodVideo.com has listed the domain on eBay. The seller claims he receives offers on the domain every week and has set the reserve at his highest received offer. The BuyItNow price is $8,000. Right now bidding is at $600 with 2 1/2 hours left. Click here to see the listing on eBay. ... read more ...

Enom to mangle out ICANN “tax” - On October 20th I wrote about GoDaddy and its practice of not including the $.25 ICANN “tax” in its registration prices (see GoDaddy should drop ICANN tax). eNom, which currently has almost 6 million domains registered by it and its resellers, has announced it will begin breaking out the fee as well. The difference is that eNom isn’t tacking it on to its existing prices but just breaking it out. For example, instead of listing domains for $8.95 they will ... read more ...

GoDaddy’s Domain Name Aftermarket adds features - GoDaddy faced lots of criticism when it first launched its domain name aftermarket service, TDNAM. One of the major problems was the long and indeterminate wait period for receiving domains after you won (see GoDaddy aftermarket – I finally got my domain). This has been resolved–the wait period is now fixed at two weeks. You still run the risk of the original registrant renewing the domain, but this chance is small. TDNAM has some added features that make ... read more ...

GoDaddy drops .com registrations to $6.95 - GoDaddy.comhas dropped its .com registrations and transfers to only $6.95 (plus $.25 ICANN fee=$7.20). It is unclear if this is only temporary. Unlike other deals offered by GoDaddy, you do not need to purchase other products at the same time to get this price. Click here to go to GoDaddy.com. ... read more ...

Lust.com hits $104k during Afternic - Lust.com has received a $104,000 offer on Afternic and this has met the seller’s reserve. If all goes well the auction will close next week and this will be one of Afternic’s biggest sales ever. This seems like a fair price for the domain. Afternic completed its sale of LatinCupid.com for $10,000 and Tweaks.com for $7,400. Tweaks.com looks like a good price for a hot term – computer tweaks. ... read more ...

Microsoft to offer giveaway domain names - It appears that Microsoft’s new Microsoft Office Live offerings will include a free domain name and webhosting to small businesses. Small businesses are high margin customers for domain name registrars because they often purchase overpriced hosting services from the registrar when ordering a domain name. It won’t be a big deal for domain name investors, but this is something worth keeping an eye on… ... read more ...

But there are some other big sales to report… 123World.com sold for $85,000 at Sedo, which also sold PriceDrive.com for $30,000. As I reported earlier, StarDust.com sold for $25,555 at Afternic. Lance Armstrong wins domain names - 7 time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong and his non-profit foundation have won a WIPO decision involving a couple domain names: livestrongbracelets.net and talk-livestrong.com. Apparently the previous owners sold the ubiquitous yellow LiveStrong bracelets on the sites (at above the $1 donation price). Personally, someone who tries to rip off the goodwill of a charity should be thrown in jail. ... read more ...
