ICANN might examination domain send procedures - Following its review of the Panix.com domain name hijacking (see ICANN blames Melbourne IT for Panix.com debacle), ICANN will review its recently implemented domain transfer procedures. In a letter about the hijacking, ICANN Chief Registrar Liaison Tim Cole says this incident could have occurred under the old policy as well and that the new policy had no bearing on it. However, he says the role of resellers in the transfer process should be reviewed. I disagree ... read more ...

TrafficClub now open to public - In a previous post (here) I told you about Moniker’s new TrafficClub program. The program aggregates a number of domain parking services into one, automatically optimizing each domain. My results so far have been mixed. However, it appears that TrafficClub is now open for sign-ups from the general public, since they now have information/sale literature on the web page. I signed up a few weeks ago while visiting SES New York. ... read more ...

Google Adsense adds new features - Google just added two new features available to most Adsense users: 1. Ad Links – as described by Google: Ad Links are a new form of text advertising that we’re offering to our AdSense publishers. Using the same contextual targeting algorithm that targets Google ads to your content pages, Ad Links units display a list of topics that are relevant to your page. Each topic, when clicked, brings the user to a page of related advertisements. The result is advertisements ... read more ...

MSN readies pay-per-click system - In a bid to challenge Yahoo’s Overture and Google Adwords, MSN is planning a pay-per-click search ad business according to Bloomberg. MSN controls a big chunk of the search market, although not as big as Yahoo or Google…and MSN will have to form partnerships to syndicate its ads. Either way, MSN will probably become the third biggest ad network overnight. If they’re successful, look for a Google Adsense type program to follow. Yahoo is currently readying ... read more ...

Domain Name Embarrassment - Nothing says you’re an old school advertising agency like forgetting to renew your domain name…and having someone else pick it up. Adrants first broke a story about marketing firm ASABAILEY snapping Ogilvy Mather’s domain name. ASABAILEY then posted a clever picture with the phrase “”If you understood the modern brand… …you’d understand how to protect it.” Hopefully Ogilvy Mather will remember to renew next time. ... read more ...

Neutral celebration to weigh .NET field by Mar 28 - According to an announcement on ICANN’s web site, third-party evaluator Telcordia will provide a report about the 5 applicants for managing the .net extension by March 28. ICANN will post this report, along with Telcordia’s rankings, on its web site. I’ve always stressed how big of a deal registry management is. Registrars dump .us remoteness insurance this week - GoDaddy joined other registrars in dropping WhoIs privacy protection for .us domains this week, as required by the Department of Commerce. Go Daddy…woah! - I’m a huge fan of GoDaddy, one of the best and most affordable domain registrars. But I think they might have received too much business from their recent advertising campaign (read: Super Bowl), as customer service has taken a major blow. They appear to be hiring customer service reps at light speed, and the training isn’t sufficient. I recently called support because I didn’t get a notification email to confirm a transfer to my account. The person transferring ... read more ...

Yahoo to plea Google Adsense - After a longgggg wait by small web site publishers, Yahoo appears to be on the verge of offering an Adsense-like product, according to CNET News.com. This is great news for web site publishers and domain name owners as there will finally be some good competition. Up to this point, the competition has been weak because content ad providers like SearchFeed and Revenue Pilot have low bid amounts…meaning less money for publishers. Yahoo’s entry might force Google ... read more ...

Moniker Unveils Paid Parking Program - I had a chance to meet with representatives from domain registrar Moniker while at the Search Engine Strategies conference in New York last week. Moniker “unveiled” its new paid parking program at the show, dubbed Traffic Club. “Unveils” is a strong word because they are still working out the kinks. In fact, if you go to TrafficClub.com you won’t find any information; just a login screen. The program seems to be in a limited beta right now. The good ... read more ...

Google’s domain name ambitions turn clearer - Ever since Google became an ICANN accredited domain name registrar but announed that the company doesn’t plan to register domains, rumors have swirled about what Google’s intentions are. After hearing representatives of Google and the search industry speak at Search Engine Strategies NYC last week, I have a clearer picture of what Google wants to do. My first guess was mostly correct. Google will use its status as a registrar to better mine the WhoIs database ... read more ...

Interchange Corporation (NASDAQ: INCX), famous essentially for the pay-per-click services, picked adult domain name Local.com for $700,000 and released a press recover about the plans. Interchange will offer a series of internal portals (e.g. chicago.local.com) that will confederate with the internal pay-per-click offerings. Perhaps it will be like CitySearch.com, with improved formation of paid for opening listings.
