All Major Media Outlets Got It Wrong, .XXX Isn’t Just For Porn Sites - I saw literally hundreds of articles today on the conditional passage of the .xxx extension by ICANN and everyone seemed to miss a very important point. .XXX isn’t just for adult content. Sure the intent of the extension if for porn sites to use .XXX domains, but in fact there is nothing that requires any site using a .XXX extension to displaying porn. So you certainly could sell cars under cars.xxx or computers under computers.xxx. Just look at the headlines of Major media mainstream publications: CNet.com ... read more ...

Quick Poll: How Many Registrations Will .XXX Have After Its First Year? - As we told you they would yesterday the ICANN board made it official today and voted to approve the .XXX extension. I spoke to ICM’s founder Stuart Lawley yesterday shortly after the vote and he told me he would expect the first .XXX domains to go live by no later than 1Q 2011. In an article published by the AP today, Mr. Lawley is quoted as saying he expects .xxx to attract at “least 500,000 registrations”,  citing the 110,000 reservations ICM has already received. He was further quoted as ... read more ...

ICANN To Approve .XXX - In an ICANN public forum held in Brussels today, it appears ICANN is set to approve the .XXX  tomorrow. Citing the findings of the independent review panel which found that ICANN acted against its own rules when it rejected the .XXX extension, it appears ICANN board has no choice but to approve the extension. Early indications is that the ICM registry will have to jump through just a couple of more hoops but passage looks certain. As a domainer I have been against the extension, as I see no benefit ... read more ...

ICANN Board Set to Approve .XXX Domain Friday - .XXX to get green light, but the value to ICM registry has wilted. Ex-ICANN staffer Kieren McCarthy is reporting that ICANN’s general counsel has spilled the beans on .xxx, saying ICANN will approve the new top level domain name tomorrow during its board meeting. Make no mistake, this is a monumental moment for ICANN. If it were up to the organization it would have let .xxx die years ago. But an independent review panel found ICANN erred. And, despite having ... read more ...

ICM Tells ICANN To SH*T Or Get Off The Pot on .XXX: But Is It Too Late? - Now that the comment period for the .XXX extension has closed, the ICM Registry sent a letter to ICANN asking them to make a decision on the extension. In the letter ICM states in part: “””ICM, having been a respectful and diligent member of the ICANN community, and having invested many millions of dollars and a full seven years in trying to bring .XXX to fruition, calls upon the Board to act decisively and with finality on this matter.  Over the years, every interested voice has been ... read more ...

After Spending $9 Million Trying To Get The .XXX Extension, ICM Goes On The Offense - The President of the ICM Registry, Stuart Lawley posted an open letter on Circle ID, clearly going on the offense in its bid to get the contract from ICANN to run the proposed .XXX registry. The open letter is addressed to “ICANN and the Internet Community”, and is republished below: ICM first applied to run the registry for the .XXX extension in 2000, reapplied in 2004 and is currently awaiting ICANN’s final decision after a recent three member “Independent Review Process” Panel found ... read more ...

No .XXX!! Shouts The Adult Industry Too - My friend Andrew just wrote a post on DomainNameWire.com on the outcry from religious groups and their members against the .XXX extension. The comment period on the .XXX extension is as Andrew noted getting a lot of comments, many from religious groups and their members against the .XXX extension but the other group also voicing opposition, once again to .XXX, is the adult industry. Mike South, legendary porn producer, writes on his blog at MikeSouth.com: “”ICANN is once again considering the ... read more ...

Why The ICA Objected To The Contract To Run The .XXX Extension In 2007 & Still Does - Back In February 2007 the Internet Commerce Association (the”ICA”) wrote to ICANN objecting to the contract ICANN was considering entering into the ICM Registry to run the .xxx extension. With the ICM Registry taking the position yesterday, that the Independent Panel’s decision mandates that ICANN enters into a contract with them to operate the .xxx registry and that they start offering .xxx domain sometime this year, I though it would be interesting to see what ICA objections to the extension ... read more ...

Will ICANN On Now Approve .XXX? ICM Says Yes; ICANN Seems To Say No - As we wrote about over the weekend the independent panel that reviewed ICANN’s handling of the application of ICM Registry to run the .xxx registry, ruled that since ICANN voted to approve the application it should have allowed it to move forward without the additional review it understook. So the question now becomes whether ICANN will follow the report of the panel and approve the ICM Registry’s application for the .xxx extension in its next meeting. The ICM Registry believes it will be allowed ... read more ...

ICM Registry Hopes to Offer .XXX Domains This Year - Registry wants to offer name.xxx later this year. After winning an independent review against ICANN for denying ICM Registry’s application for a .xxx top level domain name, the registry says it hopes to begin offering .xxx domain names later this year. Report Finds Against ICANN In Denying The .XXX Extension & Charges Them The $475K Cost - Yesterday an independent panel, the International Centre For Dispute Resolution (pdf) found in a 80 page decision, in favor of the ICM Registry against ICANN for its decision to eventually reject the .xxx extension and ruled that ICANN had to pick up all the costs of the independent panel to the tune of $475K and reimburse ICM the fees it paid for the application to the tune of another $241K.
