ICANN Issues Latest New gTLD Guidebook -
ICANN responds to comments from first draft guidebook.
[I’m on a plane to New Orleans so have had little time to review ICANN’s many documents released today. But here’s a summary.] After receiving hundreds of comments, mostly requesting major changes or clarifications to the original draft of the new TLD handbook, ICANN has made a good effort to acknowledge the comments. It released a 154 page analysis of the comments received and its response to them. ... read more ...

Does Vogue Want to Launch .Live Domain? -
An example of the confusion that will reign when new TLDs are launched.
This morning I saw an ad in the print edition of The New Yorker for Vogue.TV, the popular magazine’s multimedia web site. Here’s the ad:
Do you see the part of the ad circled in green? It’s kind of small, so let me blow it up for you:
What’s that? Does Vogue want to launch a new top level domain name .live?
Of course not. The dot is just a branding thing for its reality model show ... read more ...

Why .eBay and .IBM Make No Sense -
Marketing potential of brand-name top level domains seems limited.
I’ve had a question about the proposed new top level domains for a long time. And no one has provided me with a good answer. Hopefully someone reading this can provide one.
A handful of people have suggested new top level domains are an excellent global branding opportunity for brands such as eBay and IBM. Instead of promoting eBay.com or IBM.com, they can promote their own top level domains .ebay ... read more ...

E-Commerce Times gTLD Article Makes Little Sense -
Please help me decode this article about gTLDs.
I like reading opinions that are opposite mine. They help me either reinforce my opinions or consider the other side of the story. So when I came across an opinion piece by Naseem Javed this morning in E-Commerce Times that was in favor of new top level domains from ICANN, I eagerly started reading it.
I quickly became lost as I tried to decode Javed’s marketing speak and sentences that make little sense to me. ... read more ...

Demand Media Wants to Introduce New Domain Names -
Demand Media wants to offer new top level domain names using its eNom registrar.
The owner of the world’s second largest domain registrar, eNom, plans to apply to ICANN to offer new top level domains.
That’s the only plausible assumption based on the company’s one-sided comments to ICANN about the proposed new gTLDs. The comments were filed a couple days late, but are very thorough and cover every module. The company was in favor of every provision that will ... read more ...
Analysis: U.S. Government Has Domainers’ Backs -
Documents from U.S. Government question ICANN’s actions.
You’ve probably read a lot about ICANN’s introduction of new top level domains. Now, as reported over at DNJournal, the U.S. Government is weighing in. Domainers should be happy with its response.
I just completed reading the U.S. Department of Justice and Department of Commerce responses to ICANN’s plans. These are perhaps the most knowledgeable and well crafted responses to the plan I’ve seen, ... read more ...

Microsoft, Time Warner, Others Weigh In On New TLDs -
A quick synopsis of public comments about new top level domains.
The deadline to comment on the latest revisions of ICANN’s plan for introducing new top level domains was Monday. As is usually the case, the big companies waited until the last minute to file their comments. The general consensus is:
1. We don’t like the trademark implications
2. There’s no need to add more TLDs (save for IDNs) as they won’t actually create competition for .com
3. Don’t ... read more ...

Domainers Don’t Care if VeriSign Increases Prices -
Do domain name owners care if VeriSign can drastically increase .com prices? Apparently not.
ICANN has released new details about its proposed registry agreement and added a line-by-line comparison to previous registry agreements. These agreements dictate the terms that registries such as VeriSign (NASDAQ: VRSN) must follow as they run top level domains. You can see details of the new information on ICANN’s web site.
As written before on Domain Name Wire along ... read more ...

Will .Com Domain Name Fees Soar? -
Hidden bomb in new gTLD agreement could introduce tiered pricing to .com domains.
Upset about VeriSign (NASDAQ: VRSN) increasing your .com registration fees 7% a year? Imagine if they could raise them by whatever they want.
There’s a little time bomb in the new draft gTLD registry agreement, part of the new top level domain rollout process, that could make this happen.
Essentially, the new registry agreement wouldn’t place any pricing restrictions on registries ... read more ...
