Sedari Launches “Guess a Numbers Game” For New gTLD Program - Sedari.com a consulting company in the new gTLD space launched today a “Guess the Numbers Games” contest, where you can place you guess on the number of new gTLD applications that will be received by ICANN, during the Application period which opens on January 12th for 3 months.

Despite Push Backs, ICANN Announces Just 13 More Days Until Applications Are Open For New gTLD’s - Despite last-minute push backs from the FTC and Senator Rockerfeller it looks like ICANN is pushing ahead with the opening of the application period for new gTLD’s on January 12th.
ICANN announced on its Facebook page today:

New York Times Urges ICANN To Roll Out The New gTLD Program Slowly As A Pilot Program - In an editorial published today by the New York Times, it urges ICANN to follow the suggestion of the FTC and roll out the new gTLD plan slowly.
“”a plethora of new suffixes is just as likely to cause confusion for consumers and enable malefactors to use the new arenas for deception. Icann expects 500 to 1,000 applications in next year’s 90-day application window. Before it approves any of them, it needs to slow down and put in place better safeguards against consumer fraud. “”

ICANN New gTLD Operators Need To Deposit $18k-$300K To Meet Three Year Reserve Requirement - As part of the new gTLD program, all new gTLD applicants are required to provide for three years of operating expenses, in the way of a cash deposit with a bank that meets ICANN qualifications which is also set out below.
ICANN however has not put the pencil to this requirement and the Guidebook does not contain actual numbers or the amount of cash the applicants need to budget for.

The Washington Post Says After 6 Years ICANN Is Still Moving Too Fast On New gTLD’s - In an editorial published by The Washington Post entitled “What’s The .Rush”, the Post says that ICANN is moving too fast on the new gTLD program despite acknowledged that the program has been under consideration for 6 years.

FTC Chairman Comes Out Swinging Against ICANN’s New gTLD Plan - According to several reports, the chairman of the Federal Trade Commission Jon Leibowitz said said today that a proposal to allow for an unlimited number of new Internet addresses could be a “disaster” for consumers and businesses.
The proposal would allow for almost any new top-level domain name, which is the suffix that comes to the right of the dot, such as .Law or .coke or .NYC.

Will End Users Buy New gTLD Domains? New Survey Says Yes - According to new research out today which asked end users if they would have interest in registering generic new gTLD’s found there is a lot of interest in end users to register domain names in a new gTLD that matches their vertical such as .shop for stores or .law for lawyers.

The Opposition To a New gTLD Program Is Looking Like The FSC Vs .XXX More Everyday - Well the news yesterday that 87 “major national and international business associations and companies have joined forces with the ANA (Association of National Advertisers), forming the Coalition for Responsible Internet Domain Oversight (CRIDO) to oppose the rollout of ICANN’s top-level domain expansion program.”
The announcement got a lot of press, yet the whole thing seems puzzling to me.

CADNA Goes From Opposing New gTLD Program To Demanding A Time Frame For Opening The 2nd Round - The Collation Against Domain Abuse (CADNA) has appearently gone from being a vocal opponent of the new gTLD program to demanding a timeline for opening of the second round.
In a press release it sent out today, Josh Bourne President of CADNA in his closing remarks at the “What’s at Stake: The Reality of ICANN’s New gTLD Program for Brands” conference at the Institute of International Education’s Edgar J. Kaufman Conference Center in New York City said:

3,500 New gTLD’s? - According to a story on CircleId.com, entitled “what will be the Magic number for the new gTLD Applications?, the number might be as high as 3,500.
I personally have had conversations with repected people in the space that thought there would be 1,500-2,000 applications filed.
The significance of the number of application is that is going to bear a direct relationship to when a second round might be opened.

National Retail Federation Asks Commerce Dept To Delay New gTLD Plan But Its PR Is Full Of Inaccuracies - Today according to a press release, The National Retail Federation (NRF) asked the Commerce Department to delay implementation of the new gTLD program
“The single comment we are hearing most often from retailers is that they wish they had more time,” NRF Senior Vice President and General Counsel Mallory Duncan said. “Whether they’re for it or against it, everybody agrees that there has been too much uncertainty around this process. Right now, uncertainty reigns.”

Australian State Government To Apply For .Sydney, .Melbourne .Victoria and .NSW: “They Are Key Digital Assets” - According to a couple of stories out today State Governments in Australia announced that they are planning on applying for new Top Level internet Domains (gTLD’s).
The NSW and Victorian governments say they are going to apply for .sydney, .melbourne .victoria and .NSW
The state government said both it and the Victorian government viewed the .sydney, .melbourne and .victoria — and .NSW — domains as “key digital assets” to be secured for use by respective government agencies and their communities.

How Will ICANN Batch The New gTLD Applications? They Don’t Know, Yet - Kurt Pritz of ICANN, spoke today at the NewDomains.org conference when the question was asked; how will ICANN batch or process applications for the new gTLD’s?
ICANN previously stated that if more than 500 application were received they would process them in batches, and that no more than 1,000 extension would be delegated in any year, so how any application is batched may decide if a particular application comes out late in 2012 or maybe for not a year or more later.

UnitedDomains.com Tops 400,000 In New gTLD Pre-Reservations - UnitedDomains.com which just has been taking pre-reservations for new gTLD domain names back in March of this year, just crossed the 400,000 mark.
Currently there are 406,000+ new gTLD domain name pre-reservations at United.

Next Up: NewDomains.Org Conference in Munich Next Week - Tommorow we start heading out to Munich for the NewDomains.org conference.

Who Will Get .Delta & Other Sticky Points In Our Final Dot Nxt Post - This is going to be my last post about the Dot Nxt Conference but an important one.
In the audience from Dot Nxt was a women from Nigeria from a region known as Delta and she was at the conference to try to learn about getting .Delta for her community.

From The Dot Nxt Conference: The Top Auction For A New gTLD May Top $50 Million - I moderated a panel on from the Dot Nxt conference yesterday and asked the panel how much they predicted the highest price of a auction new gTLD extension would go for.
As you may know if more than one application is received for the same string, the string maybe awarded to the high bidder in an auction.
