Domainer Call to Action: An Important ICANN Comment Period - You should comment on this proposed new procedure for hijacked domain names. It’s rare that I ask the domain community to comment on a particular topic at ICANN. It’s even rarer that domain investors actually follow through. But there’s an important process going on to establish a mechanism to return hijacked domain names, and your input is needed. That a process to return stolen domain names is in the works is a good thing. We hear every day about stolen ... read more ...

Sticky Points On New gTLD’s: Terrorists, Territories, & Trademark Violators Are Worse Than Child Murders - From the ICANN meeting in Brussels this week there are a few more “sticky points” that coming out of the new gTLD process. The sticky points as I call them are issues raised by commentators in the public sessions on the new gTLD’s. Many of the issue surround who is disqualified from owning a gTLD. The guidebook requires a background check on all officers, directors and owners of 15% or more of a new gTLD. Some members of the Arab community seem to be quite upset with the language in the Guidebook ... read more ...

ICANN Traveling to a Changed Colombia - Security is only a minor concern for upcoming ICANN meeting in Colombia. My image of Colombia is colored by the past. It’s an image of the days of Pablo Escobar, rampant kidnappings, crime, and guerrillas forces. It’s shaped by books such as Mark Bowden’s Killing Pablo and the 2000 film Proof of Life. So when ICANN announced its December meeting would be held in Cartagena, Colombia, my first thought was “here we go again”. Another Nairobi. Another Mexico. ... read more ...

So What’s In The ICANN Goody Bag? - Anyone who has ever been to a TRAFFIC domain show or other industry convention, knows that all attendees get a goody bag full of stuff from sponsors and advertisers that pay to give there stuff away. The ICANN show is no different and DomainNameWire.com even pointed out last week the curious relationship between ICANN and Sponsors. So I was pretty interested to see what swag was included in the handsome ICANN Brussels backpack that each attendee got; 1 .Org key chain. 1 .Org notebook, the paper kind, ... read more ...

3 Deadbeat Domain Registrars Bite a Dust - Three inactive registrars terminated for failure to pay accreditation fees. Well I’m Off To My First ICANN Meeting - Well some 13 years after I registered my first domain, I’m heading off to my first ICANN meeting. I’m really not sure what to expect, but we are off to Brussels. If you have attended a show in the past, please feel free to give me some tips or pointers. This show looks like an very important one with the new gTLD’s and all the ancillary issues in play. The Guidebook V4 just came out for the new gTLD’s and its full of controversy. Of course at this meeting ICANN is expected to make a decision ... read more ...

New Economic Study: Limit New TLD Rounds To Measure Effects - New ICANN-sanctioned report suggests limiting new TLD application rounds in order to collect more data. ICANN has published its latest hired economic report on the costs and benefits of introducing new top level domain names. Unlike the last report from a different author, this one lays out clear logic rather than just playing to the hands of ICANN. It is a well reasoned report that lays out the truth about the costs and benefits of new TLDs, and comes to a conclusion ... read more ...

The Curious Case of ICANN Sponsorship - Some interesting sponsors for next week’s ICANN conference. Next week the domain name world will converge on Brussels for ICANN meeting number 38. It costs a lot of money to organize these ICANN meetings and the organization often comes under fire for this. To help defray the cost it offers various sponsorships. There are a couple interesting sponsors for the upcoming meeting, most notably ICM Registry. As you might recall, ICM Registry is embroiled in a dispute ... read more ...

ICANN Predicts 500 new gTLD Applications & A $2M Profit, though It’s Budget Is Flawed - Courtesy of our friends at Mind +Machines, it appears ICANN has based it budget on its prediction of 500 applications for new gTLD’s on the initial roll out. The document showing this is ICANN’s New gTLD Program Budget. As M+M states, ICANN estimate of  500 applications doesn’t take into account duplicate or conflicting applications. “If we suppose that 25% are in conflict, that would leave us with approximately 425 unique TLDs applied for. Subtracting a further 10% who drop out, that ... read more ...

If You Can’t Go to Brussels, You Can Still Participate Online - ICANN holds informational sessions on remote participation for June meeting. If something good came of many attendees pulling out of the last ICANN meeting in Kenya for security reasons, it was the tidal shift to remote participation in ICANN meetings. A number of people who chose not to attend the meeting went to the web and ICANN’s many remote participation features to stay involved and virtually raise their hand to speak. A group of domain companies even set ... read more ...

If Your Planning On Applying For A New gTLD You Better Plan On Being Patient - The 312 page ICANN gTLD Gudebook v4, was released over the weekend and all I can say if your going to apply for one of these new extensions you best be patient. Under the guidebook if all goes well the minimum time from close of the application period to acceptance is going to be 8 months, although many things according to the guide book can push it back. Depending on the application, and such things as whether someone files an objection, could leave the applicant waiting up to 19 months for approval. The ... read more ...

ICANN Opens Floodgates Over Holiday Weekend - Information overload hits over Memorial Day weekend. Maybe it was because this weekend was the end of the month. Or perhaps it was to meet deadlines for the upcoming ICANN conference. Regardless, ICANN chose a U.S. holiday weekend to release a number of very important documents. The big kahuna is the fourth draft applicant guidebook for new TLDs. This may be the last “draft” of the guidebook. It will take a while for me to go through it and I’ll report back ... read more ...

ICANN Travel Survey – Poll FAIL - ICANN wants your feedback on international meetings, but it won’t be easy. ICANN is kicking off its “Meetings for the Next Decade” consultation process to figure out how to handle its international meetings. I remember at DOMAINfest last year Steve Wozniak joking about when he was asked to join the ICANN board, and how he viewed it as just a way to take some free vacations during the year. ... read more ...

Understanding a Value of VeriSign’s Monopoly - The definition of a cash cow. Just how valuable is VeriSign’s monopoly on .com and .net domain name registrations? With rumors that the company is seeking a buyer for its security group, leaving it basically with just registry services, the monopoly is being thrust back into the spotlight. At latest count there are roughly 87 million .com domains registered and 13 million .net domains. As of July 1, the price VeriSign charges on .com will be $7.34 and .net to ... read more ...

VeriSign Withdraws Request for “Domain Name Exchange” Service - Registry nixes domain trade-in plans — for now. Last month VeriSign submitted an evaluation request to ICANN for a so-called “Domain Name Exchange”. VeriSign has withdrawn the request according to the evaluation status on ICANN’s web site. The service would basically allow domain name registrars to return unused domain names in exchange for others. This would be ideal for companies that sell web packages for less than a year at a time. For example, a web ... read more ...

How ICANN Plans to Spend $60 Million of Your Money This Year - New TLDs are top budget item — but also the only line item to decrease. If you’re reading this blog, you are probably one of the many people that funds ICANN’s operations. You pay the registrar, which in turn pays ICANN and the registry. The registry also pays ICANN. In short, without domain registrants, ICANN has very little money. So how ICANN spends its money should be important to you. The non-profit has released its draft proposed 2011 financial year ... read more ...

ICANN Draft Advisory Could Put Chill on Domain Proxy Services - Draft advisory is a stark reminder of the legal liabilities and limitations of domain proxy services. I’ve argued before that providing whois proxy service (commonly referred to as whois privacy, although technically they are different) isn’t free. A big reason is legal repercussions of serving as a proxy. Technically, a proxy service is the registrant of the domain name and the service merely “licenses” it to the person who actually wanted to register ... read more ...

IDN Top Level Domain Names in a Nutshell - A simple primer to IDN top level domains, courtesy of ICANN. One of the reasons many people are “turned off” by internationalized domain names is that they don’t understand how they work. Admittedly, much of the information about IDNs to date has been described in a technical matter, turning people off even more. So I was delighted to see a blog post from ICANN’s Tina Dam titled “IDN Usability“. I highly recommend reading it, as is clearly explains IDN ... read more ...

Religious Group: Pray for Rod Beckstrom, Kill Porn Domain - Comment period for .xxx is getting out of control At first it was silly. Then it got annoying. Now it’s ridiculous. The comment period for what ICANN should do about an independent review board’s finding in favor of ICM Registry to operate .xxx has become a mockery.
