ICANN/GAC Session Marred By Name Calling & Disagreement - Today’s much anticipated meeting between the ICANN Board and the Government Advisory Counsel was marred by name calling and disagreement.
The meeting scheduled to run from 4pm-6pm didn’t start until 4:45 and ran until well after 7pm local time.
The main topic of the day was once again Trademarks with the GAC wanting to recognize Trademark holders rights based off of the local law under which the trademark was issued, including many EU countries where a trademark can be issued without use.

Looks Like The New gTLD Process May Hinge On Today’s Meeting Between The GAC & The ICANN Board - As Kevin Murphy chatted about on Domainincite.com today, a letter sent by the chair of the Government Advisory Council (GAC) Heather Dryden who happens to be the representative from Canada, to the ICANN board makes it clear that the GAC still has major issues with ICANN over the new gTLD program.
One of the lingering issues The GAC has is “competition concerns in particualr those resulting from changes to the registry-registrar cross ownership rules.”

ICANN “Hedge” In Singapore Will Kick off New gTLD Communications Plan -
I predict new TLD marketing will start after ICANN’s Singapore meeting this month.
Just about everyone — including me — is horrible at predicting what ICANN will do and when it will do it regarding new top level domain names. The only people who’ve been right are those that said “it’s not going to happen at this meeting”.
That said, I’m going to take another crack at it. Here’s what I predict for this month’s ICANN meeting in Singapore:

Exclusive: ICA Letter To ICANN Brass On Variable Pricing & URS Application To Existing TLD’s Including .Com - Yesterday Phil Corwin sent a letter to ICANN and copied several individuals concerning comments made by existing TLD operators that want the same terms and conditions placed on them that the new gTLD operators are getting most notable no more price caps, and therefore the ability to charge what amounts to a premium annual renewal fee which could GREATLY increase the costs of renewing premium domains.
Through this process we could also wind up with things like the Uniform Rapid Suspension (URS) applying ... read more ...

ICA: “Registry/Registrar Integration during Existing gTLDs Could End Price Controls and Impose URS on .Com and .Net” - The Internet Commerce Association (ICA) has just put up a post that all domainers need to take notice of and therefore I’m republishing it on theDomains.
The Post is written by Phil Corwin of the ICA which talks about a topic we have been warning about for a couple of years now, which is the existing Registries may want the same terms and conditions in their contract the new gTLD operators will be getting including the right to price domains differently (variably pricing) and there is also a movement ... read more ...

Olympics and Red Cross Push for Special Rights with New TLDs -
GAC backs move by groups to get names added to reserved names lists for new TLDs.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) continues to pester ICANN about giving it special privileges for new top level domain names, and now the American Red Cross is adding its name to the hat as well.

What The Settlement Of The CFIT Case Means To The Cost Of Your .Com Registrations & Renewals - Now that VeriSign settled the CFIT case, I thought we should take a look at what that means in dollars and cents to domain holders.
Verisign contract to run the .Com registry (.Net too) calls for presumptive renewals and the ability to increase the wholesale cost of domain name registrations and renewals, 7% in 4 of every 6 years.
Currently the wholesale price of domain name registrations and renewals sits $7.85 (there is also an ICANN fee of $.18 but we are going to exclude that for now).

Tucows Handicaps a Chances of New TLDs Kicking Off In Singapore -
Will the new TLD application process finally get approved next month?
For a while it looked assured that the new top level domain name applicant guidebook would get the green light at ICANN’s meeting in Singapore this June.
But then Lawrence Strickling, head of the NTIA, said he didn’t think this was possible unless ICANN got on board with government demands.
So what does Tucows CEO Elliot Noss think the chances are?

From House Hearing; ICANN: Domainers Are Against New gTLD’s Because They Will Lose The Value Of There Beachfront Property - The House subcommittee on the new gTLD’s just ended in Washington and it was as bloody as expected.
Of course the representative from ICANN, Kurt Pritz its Senior Vice President, didn’t help himself or ICANN but making inaccurate statements, failing to explain the new gTLD process properly or putting the new gTLD process in a positive light.
