How to Buy Expired Domains Before they Get Auctioned -
Do a little leg work and you can nab expiring domains for a fraction of the price.

‘Halvarez’ Caused $2M Loss to SnapNames Customers -
Size of bidding scandal becomes clear.
A document filed today (pdf) in a lawsuit against Oversee.net and SnapNames shows that the total loss to U.S. customers from the bidding scandal was about $1 million, including interest. The total damages for all customers can be extrapolated to be about $2.0 million.
The document was a declaration of Lance Martinez, General Counsel of Domain Services for Oversee.net, filed in response to the court questioning if the case was ... read more ...

Simple Math during Play in SnapNames Lawsuit -
How much did customers overpay thanks to Halvarez?
Last week I reported about how the judge in the California lawsuit against SnapNames questioned how much money was at issue. In order to qualify for class action status, at least $5 million must be at stake.
In questioning the total number, the judge noted that the plaintiff in the case had lost a whopping $20. If ‘halvarez’ participated in 50,000 auctions at an average overpayment of $20, that would be only ... read more ...

Dynadot Offers VeriSign’s Expired Domain Data Treasure Trove -
Dynadot extends data use to customers.
Last year VeriSign quietly started offering its Internet Profile Service (IPS) to domain name registrars. The service provides traffic data on pending delete domain names. Since VeriSign runs the DNS for .net and .com, it has access to data that most other sources don’t have.
Now domain name registrars are beginning to make the same data available to their customers. One of the first is Dynadot, which offers IPS to bulk ... read more ...
Answers to 3 Questions about a SnapNames Bidding Scandal -
Answers to three commonly asked questions about the ‘halvarez’ scandal.
The topic commonly known as ‘halvarez’ — the insider bidding scandal at SnapNames — wasn’t a major topic at DOMAINfest. I didn’t expect it to be, either. Within days of the scandal breaking I talked to several big SnapNames customers. They were disappointed about what happened, but also understanding. Most had accepted SnapNames’ compensation offer and moved on.
But a number ... read more ...
How Network Solutions Notifies Customers about Expiring Domain Names -
Registrar explains its expiration notification policy.
A lot of times domain name registrars get the blame when their customers forget to renew domain names. “I didn’t get the notice” is a common line.
Of course, you can easily say the opposite. Really, how many emails does GoDaddy need to send me about my expiring domain names? It may seem like they trip all over themselves to get you to renew domain names. And that’s exactly the point.

South African Airways Blames Service Providers for Domain Expiration -
SAA plays the blame game.
South African Airways (SAA) is blaming service providers for letting its domain name expire, causing a web site outtage. When the domain name expired, Network Solutions followed its standard practice of changing the DNS and sending visitors to a landing page.
In a note from SAA acting CEO Chris Smyth on the company’s web site, Smyth writes:
…This outage was not as a result of any oversight by SAA or its personnel, nor was this due to ... read more ...

Oversee.net and SnapNames have filed a motion to dismiss a lawsuit filed against it in wake of the SnapNames insider bidding scandal.
The lawsuit seeking class action status was filed by Stewart Resmer, who overpaid for a SnapNames auction by $20 in 2006 due to the insider bidding.
In its motion to dismiss (pdf), Oversee.net and SnapNames argue:

2009 Domain Dunce Award: SnapNames Due Diligence -
Due diligence in expired domain company acquisition missed a couple big problems.
Mergers and Acquisitions due diligence is thankless work. You have to learn everything about a company, including things about it that its current owners don’t know, in a short period of time. If you get everything right, no one remembers to thank you a couple years later. If you mess up, everyone knows about it.
And that’s exactly the case with SnapNames. The due diligence ... read more ...

Domain auction site awarded another patent.
Domain name auction platform SnapNames has been awarded U.S. patent 7,627,628 (pdf) for “Demand based domain name auctionability.” The patent’s abstract describes a system that triggers a domain as auction worthy if there is a certain level of demand for it:

Nelson Brady on SnapNames Scandal -
Don’t expect an explanation from Nelson Brady any time soon.
When I cover a major domain industry event, I like to get both sides of the story. So when the news about the SnapNames insider bidding scandal broke, one of my first calls was to the man allegedly at the center of the controversy, former SnapNames VP Nelson Brady.
Instead of writing about the conversation then, I wanted to wait until I had a chance to have a more in-depth discussion with Brady or his ... read more ...

A Peek Inside a SnapNames Lawsuit -
Lawyer filed claim on behalf of brother.
Earlier today I talked to Santiago A. Cueto, the first lawyer to file a lawsuit against SnapNames for the insider bidding scandal.
He was quick to the docket because lead plaintiff Carlos A. Cueto is his brother. While other firms were trying to find a lead plaintiff, Santiago’s brother was emailing him the details.
This is an interesting case because SnapNames has already admitted wrong doing and offered to compensate ... read more ...

Arrington: Apologies Shouldn’t be Conditional -
TechCrunch article questions Snap’s rebate requirements.
Given the bad taste Michael Arrington’s has in his mouth from his time in the domain name industry, he’s laying down the heat on SnapNames and its bidding scandal. Today he wrote a second article about the scandal, saying that SnapNames’ request that customers sign a waiver to get their rebate is not right.
I understand where he’s coming from, but I also see why SnapNames is requesting this. When ... read more ...

SnapNames employee bid in auctions, but the bigger news is how company is handling it.
You’ll probably read a lot today about how a SnapNames employee had been bidding on auctions for the past four years. In case you haven’t heard the story, here’s a brief recap:

Epik Buys JustDropped -
Epik buys drop catching search and registration tool.
Rob Monster’s Epik has acquired JustDropped, an expired domain search and drop catching service.
Last week at the SedoPro event in Key West Monster and JustDropped owner Dan Rubin were glued at the hip. I chatted with both of them about the future of Epik, but assumed the reason they were so tight was that Monster was using JustDropped for catching domains for his Epik network. Apparently it was a little bit ... read more ...

Domain Expiration Comments to ICANN Working Group -
My comments on expired domains.
As I wrote last week, ICANN is seeking feedback on the domain expiration process. Here’s the feedback I just submitted. The deadline for submitting feedback is September 10…
I believe most registrars do an effective job informing customers of upcoming expirations. For example, Go Daddy sends multiple expiration notices by email and even postal mail. Most registrars continue to send these expiration notices after a domain expires. ... read more ...
