2012 Domain Dunce: TAS and Digital Archery -
“Glitch” filled system gets Domain Dunce honors in 2012.
ICANN’s new top level domain program is the most watched initiative in the non-profit’s entire history.
So you’d think ICANN would have double and triple checked all of the technology supporting it, including the TLD Application System (TAS).
Alas, TAS failed. Big time.
In April ICANN had to take the system offline due to a technical “glitch”. The glitch made it possible for some applicants to ... read more ...

Sayonara, Digital Archery -
We hardly knew ye.
Resolved (2012.06.27.NG06), the New gTLD Program Committee directs the President and CEO to terminate the Digital Archery process as approved in Resolutions 2011.12.08.04-2011.12.08.07.
Rationale for Resolution 2012.06.27.NG06
To remain accountable to the ICANN community, after careful consideration of the objections raised to the digital archery process, and following the suspension of the process after identification of a technical issue, the ... read more ...

If we play a ICANN game, design to get burned -
More wasted money and resources. Get used to it.
It’s never pretty seeing the sausage get made.
It hasn’t been pretty seeing the new TLD program launch.
A handful of companies invested a lot of money early on as they worked to help form ICANN’s new top level domain program. As the program creation process dragged on they spent money on salaries, office space, etc. As it became clear that the process was going to take longer than expected they ended up laying ... read more ...

Did a digital archery association put a final spike in a coffin of cursed scheme? -
Company claims it reported issue to ICANN earlier this week.
So ICANN has “suspended” digital archery, a way to divide up new top level domain applicants into batches.
This was the right move, albeit a couple weeks late. Now 20% of applications have shot an arrow, and many more applicants have invested significant resources into the process.
True to form, ICANN pushed forward with its plan despite multiple warning signs that it should take another look at it.
Now, ... read more ...

Another digital archery use launches. Here’s how we should compensate for one of these services. -
Digital archery services are a no lose proposition — for the service provider.
I just got a press release from an outfit called Digital Archery Hotshots, the latest company to offer digital archery solutions for ICANN’s batching process.
I don’t recall how many digital archery pitches I’ve received now, but I think I might no longer be able to count them on one hand.
Most of these companies have a pay-for-results system, where you pay a higher fee if you ... read more ...

TLDH: Digital archery might have technical bugs -
Big new top level domain applicant finds odd results with digital archery system.
Digital archery, which creates a secondary timestamp for new TLD applications that will determine how they are batched, is run through ICANN’s TLD Application System (TAS).
This is the same system that was taken offline for over a month due to a security glitch that allowed some competing applicants to see limited data from other applicants.
So you don’t suppose there could be problems ... read more ...

Economist on Digital Archery: “Frankly, anything is improved than this” -
Thies Lindenthal finds fault with ICANN’s digital archery.
Plenty of people have come out against ICANN’s digital archery plan for new top level domains. Digital archery will determine the batch in which a new TLD application is reviewed and ultimately will have correlation to when they come online.

Fate of new TLD sequence dynamic by click of a symbol and location -
ICANN reveals more details about its digital archery game.
The smart money would have set up their registry in Africa…
ICANN has provided more details about its so-called digital archery solution that will determine in which batch a new TLD application will be evaluated.
Digital archery involves setting a target time and then clicking a button as close to the target time as possible.
With close to 2,000 applications, but many of them duplicates, we’re probably ... read more ...

ICANN announces new TLD exhibit date, digital archery schedule, 500 unprepared applications -
Dates are finalized and a lot of applicants have work to do before tomorrow.
ICANN just provided a timeline for the new top level domain application process going forward.
The “big reveal” date, when ICANN releases the full list of applicants and the strings they applied for, will be June 13.
Digital Archery, which will be used for slotting which batch an application falls into, will run June 8 to June 28.
Additionally, ICANN says there are over 500 incomplete ... read more ...

Should ICANN can digital archery? -
Given the latest data, ICANN should consider changing how it batches new TLDs.
With 1,268 registered users for ICANN’s new top level domain application system, it’s clear there will be over 1,000 unique top level domains going through the new TLD process. That means we’ll have “batching“, where approximately 500 domains at a time go through the full evaluation and addition to the root.
The current plan for determining which 500 applications go into each ... read more ...
