The End of Domain Tasting - In all this hype and hoopla of new gTLDs being proposed by ICANN one major issue was completely overshadowed – that of domain tasting. ICANN has addressed it in this meeting and measures recommended to prevent it from taking place. Domain tasting is the practice of registering domain names and ‘tasting’ the traffic before registering or dropping them. This is mostly done by the bigger players in the industry like registrars and drop services though some registrars do allow registrants ... read more ...

Forget Domains, buy a TLD! | mwzd.com - ICANN’s Paris conference has thrown up some interesting ideas and questions, chief among them has been the possibility of introducing thousands of new TLDs on a pay and play basis. This BBC News Story has the crux of the issue. What they’re essentially saying is that anyone willing to fork out between $39,000 – $390,000 for a TLD could possibly buy their own! What this means is that if I had the money and the inclination – I could buy and promote .mwzd (not really, merely an example ) ... read more ...

The Different Types of Domainers - There are quite a few approaches to domains and domaining that domainers take. Its like the stock market or real estate market to a certain extent, everyone has their own strategy and most of them pay well for their proponents. I’ve pretty much seen most of the types and will try and enumerate them to enable you to follow what you’d rather be doing. The Investor These are the sharpest of them all. Buy good quality when prices are low, hold long term, sell high. These guys hold onto assets, ... read more ...

The LLLL.com Conundrum -

I’ve been examination a LLLL.com or 4 minute .com scenario, sincerely closely, for a longest of times. we started regulating DomainTools (or whois.sc as it was famous then) to collect these lists for a while in 2006. In fact, thats what got me meddlesome in domaining in a initial place. Well that and a fact that the programs were churning out domains that were good seo-wise though terrible viz code value, though thats another story.

The Great American Snowe Job - A new bill currently seeking passage in the US senate is trying to surreptitiously change the face of the domain industry and extend American ‘ownership’ on the web. You and me stand to lose any domain we own, developed, undeveloped, tm-ed, non-tm-ed, geo and generic… I kid you not. Be prepared to protect or lose your domain names, generics or any others, specially if they’re .com or .net as those are controlled by Verisign. The bill goes way beyond its brief… if it becomes law, ... read more ...

Domaining is not cybersquatting! - I read an article in a major newspaper a few days back – the new form of cybersquatting – domaining. Hogwash! While booking someone’s name or brand is generally unacceptable, there is another type of domain investment that’ll shock your socks off. Before I go any further, here’s some recommended reading – #1 – pls note, this is just for 2008. here’s the one from 2007 – #2 And here are some resources to allow ... read more ...

What creates a Domain Name Valuable - There are a lot of factors that make a domain name really valuable. Generic / Dictionary words command the highest premium.
