Greetings from a Land of .CZ - I’m in Prague for the DOMAINfest conference. Greetings from the land of .cz – The Czech Republic, that is. I arrived in Prague Sunday afternoon after about 20 hours of travel, a couple days in advance of this week’s DOMAINfest conference. After a long day of travel it’s never fun to hail a cab to the hotel, so many thanks to the good folks at Elephant Traffic for picking my wife and I up at the airport. (In style, I might add.) Today I walked many miles ... read more ...

Think About This Before You Help a Friend with Domains - Don’t offer to help a friend with domain names unless you qualify it first. I’m often asked by friends for my assistance with buying a domain name. After providing advice or making an initial contact over a dozen times, I’ve learned a few lessons: 1. Make sure your friend is willing to pay up for the domain. Often times I’ve reach out on behalf of a friend and the other party asked for something reasonable, such as $5,000. My friend would ask me to counter ... read more ...

WTF? iPodder.Org during $25K At Godaddy With 6 Days To Go - This one certainly has me scratching my head. The domain name iPodder.org is currently at an expired Godaddy auction and already has a high bid of $25K with still over 6 days to go. The domain according to Godaddy recevies around 2,500 visitors a month. iPodder.com is a parked page and does not seem to have that much traffic. Besides the possible trademark issues does this make sense to anyone? Guess it must make sense to a few of you as 6 people bidding on this domain with 3 willing to pay over ... read more ...

I’m referring to the life blood of any business: revenues.” “Google’s 2010 revenues will be $28 billion, give or take a billion. The goal of this writeup is to illustrate the ways that Facebook’s annual revenues could grow ... read more ...

Although the company’s shares are not yet publicly traded they have been selling privately though sites like SharesPost and SecondMarket.com. Spiting the shares increases the amount of share the company has available for employees and investors. The last shares I have seen trade privately have been at $75. Sharespost.com  pegs Facebook’s valuation at $26 billion Google+Michael Berkens ... read more ...

Google Starts Its Own Shortener & Goes With A Hack: Goog.Gl - Google just launched it own Web shortener choosing a domain hack, Goo.gl. Goo.gl was originally a proprietary way for Google to abbreviate its Web addresses within services such as Google News or Google Maps. The new Goo.gl website will abbreviate your links and to share with others. However unlike Godaddy and Twitter which recently launched their shortners with a one letter .Co, Google decided to go with a Hack. Interesting. Google+Michael Berkens ... read more ...

VeriSign Launches Its “Who Was” Historical Whois Service: Is It A DomainTools.com Killer? - Verisign Launched its WhoWas Product today. When I first heard about the product it sounded like a DomainTools.com killer. But now that the product has launched, I think DomainTools.com doesn’t have much to worry about. Here’s how  Verisign’s described the service when it made its request to ICANN for product approval: (pdf) “VeriSign periodically receives requests for historical domain name registration data, including information on domain name which have been deleted. These requests are ... read more ...

Wesabe Founder: “A domain name doesn’t win we a market” - Wesabe co-founder talks about why — and why not — his company failed. Via TechCrunch today I came across this postmortem by Wesabe co-founder Marc Hedlund. Wesabe was a personal finance web site that competed with Mint.com. Despite coming to market earlier, Wesabe eventually shut down while Intuit acquired Mint.com for $170 million. Hedlund makes convincing arguments for why Mint.com won, but also disagrees with other often cited reasons. One reason he disagrees ... read more ...

Pamela Anderson Gets Another Domain from Alberta Hot Rods - Pamela Anderson beats an old foe to get domain name. Pamela Anderson has won a case for the domain name PamAnderson.com in an arbitration case at World Intellectual Property Forum. The case was brought against Alberta Hot Rods, a group that had a run in with Anderson back in 2002. In the 2002 WIPO case Anderson won the domain names PamelaAnderson.com, PamelaAnderson.net, and PamelaLee.com. What’s somewhat strange is how Anderson didn’t go after the PamAnderson.com ... read more ...

Miss Universe Goes After Sex Tape Domain Names - Miss Universe turns to arbitration to take down web sites. Miss Universe L.P. has filed complaints with World Intellectual Property Forum in an effort to gain control of two web site promoting sex videos. One complaint was filed against missuniversesexvideo.com (warning: explicit), a web site that indicates it has video from a sex tape scandal that broke last year. (Did I really just link to TMZ?) The other complaint was filed against missusasex.com, which seems ... read more ...
