Possible new top level domain name gets even more exposure.
If you’re ICM Registry, you couldn’t ask for better publicity for the .xxx top level domain name: CNN has a poll on its home page asking people “Do you think pornographic websites should have their own “.xxx” domain?”
So far a whopping 272,555 have voted in the poll. 83% have answered “Yes”.
It’s an unscientific poll, and who knows the thinking behind why people are answering “yes”. But it doesn’t really matter as this means over a quarter million people have processed the idea of a .xxx domain name.
Anyone planning to launch a new TLD would love to get exposure like that. This is added on top of dozens of mainstream articles about the TLD over the past week. Sure, not all of it was favorable and much of it was inaccurate. But all press is good press.
Check back later today for a Q&A with ICM Registry’s Stuart Lawley.
John McCormac says
Confirmation, if any was needed, that sex sells? The .xxx TLD is still a long way from launching but the media is reporting it as if ICANN has approved it for launch. While people may vote for .xxx in a random poll, would they actually register .xxx domain names?
Domainer says
My guess is people are voting for them so they could be isolated from other extensions and presumably blocked en masse.
Andrew Allemann says
@ Domainer – possibly, but it really doesn’t matter — the publicity is nice for ICM.
Jon says
I’m positive that @Domainer is correct on his guess.
Also, this type of public feedback has got to be making owners of .com adult web sites a bit nervous.
Bill says
The positive vote for having a .xxx extension probably includes people from the two extremes of the spectrum – those who want a new adult revenue source AND those who think it will better hide adult material from their children. What the latter group might not fully understand is that having .xxx websites will NOT replace all the existing thousands and thousands of existing adult content websites and domain redirects. Their kids and teens will still unwillingly (and willingly) find those legacy adult sites. They’re not going away.
