The U.S. government announced that it intends to continue playing a key role in the internet by not giving complete control over to ICANN. The U.S. government will continue to maintain the root master file that controls top level domains.
Practically, this will have little effect except to upset other nations that want ICANN to hold more power. I don’t know which is more effective–ICANN or the U.S. government. My only concern is that the U.S. Government will try to play a more active role, such as trying to use the .xxx extension as a mandatory extension for adult sites.
