.Co registrar creates innovative way to increase odds of getting your .co domain on July 20.
I’ve written about how various registrars are handling pre-registrations for .co domain names, which will become generally available July 20. None of the registrars has been explicit about how they’ll decide which domains to send to the registry first when registration becomes available.
But one registrar has come up with a nifty idea to guarantee you a spot near the top of the line when they ping the registry on July 20. At 300.com.co, run by accredited .co registrar mi.com.co, you can pay-to-play, effectively buying a specific spot in its order on July 20. For $300, you can guarantee yourself to have the first domain that mi.com.co sends to the registry on July 20. Of course, mi.com.co will be fighting with 9 other registrars, but that’s still a good position to be in.
At the time of writing it looks like the best spot available at 300.com.co is #5, which will also cost you $300. The price decreases as you move down the list, with slots 201-300 costing just $130.

OK, you “get your .CO domain” – Congratulations
Now, you may want to make sure it is “resolved” for end-users.
1. Some of the large DNS Platforms are reporting that they are banning .CM and .CO
2. The new DNS software will give the *-CO.com owner first-right-of-refusal by asking that owner for NS records. It may
pay to control the companion .COM for $7.
3. In the .USA never under-estimate the ability of U.S. Senators to order the FCC to create a new DNS and .CO will go to COlorado.
4. Depending on what your Golden .CO Domain is, you may find a .COM owner that likes it also…in 6 months?

The registrars which are more serious about their business have only accepted 1 pre order per name for the go live phase.
Jim Fleming says
“the go live phase” may mean different things to different groups
For SCUBA DNS – [Self-Contained UNIX Broadband Appliances] – the GO://LIVE phase is when domains are burned into flash memory in the consumer’s Set-Top-Box & BluRay Players
The Registrars largely go away and the Registry becomes the back-up not the primary.
In order to get to SCUBA DNS, these Market Trials attract early adopters. Some of them may then decide to protect their domains in their $50 CPE devices. WRT160N is an example.
The SCUBA devices combine to form a Virtual Registry. The Network IS the Registry, in GO://LIVE.
.CO is a long way from the GO://LIVE phase
Paulien says
Will .co be popular? Yes, The “.co” domain could clearly be interpreted as an abbreviation for “company,” much as “.com” is meant to represent “commercial.
ST says
After reading this you have to wonder how the 10 Registrars will handle the requests for the clients of their resellers.
Will the registrar give the same priority to it’s resellers compared with their own customers ?
Afterall a reseller is a competitor of one of the other 10 registrars that where “chosen” by the .CO registry.
The system as it is now forces other ICANN acreditted registrars to become a reseller with one of the 10 Registrars..
Andrew Allemann says
@ ST – I’ve wondered the same thing about resellers. I would think their reseller agreement stipulates some % of the initial queries.
