ICANN, the global coordinator of the Internet’s domain name system, is losing popularity.
Approval of ICANN has waned in the past year, according to the 2007 Domain Name Wire survey. Only 24% of survey respondents approve of ICANN, down from 33% last year.
A number of factors lead to ICANN’s drop in approval ratings. New contracts with registries that allow for price hikes are extremely unpopular with domain name owners. The domain name community is also frustrated with ICANN’s inaction during the RegisterFly domain registrar implosion. Many domain owners lost their domains because of RegisterFly.
50% of respondents say ICANN’s performance is acceptable, while 26% say it is poor.
ICANN is seeking public input about its performance. Earlier this month the organization asked the community for feedback on its performance, including:
-Is ICANN becoming more transparent, accessible and accountable?
-Has ICANN improved its operational performance?
-Has ICANN improved its performance in the development of Policy?
-Has ICANN increased international participation?
