Open Source Parking aims to cut Microsoft’s perceived server share.
I came across an interesting site called OpenSourceParking.com today. OpenSourceParking urges domain name owners to park their domains on open source servers as opposed to Microsoft Server. According to the site, GoDaddy’s recent move from open source servers to Microsoft-based servers created a 5% swing in Microsoft’s perceived share of the server market (at Apache’s loss). As the site points out, this is just a perceived difference because the GoDaddy domains in question are just 4.5 million parking pages.
According to the site, Microsoft may have paid GoDaddy to make the switch from Apache to Microsoft. Imagine that — instead of GoDaddy paying for server space it is being paid to use Microsoft!
The goal of OpenSourceParking is to restore the perceived market share in Netcraft reports and to generate revenue for open source initiatives.
Should domainers park their domains with OpenSourceParking? Only if you don’t mind losing the money from your parked domains (and I can’t see anyone not minding that). But if you want to try it out, just set your nameservers to:
ns1.opensourceparking.com
ns2.opensourceparking.com
