Domain sales database now includes 20,000 records.
NameBio, a database site of domain name sales, now has over 20,000 domain sales records worth over $225M in its database. The site launched just over 6 months ago but has rapidly innovated to make searching for historical domain sales easy.
I use sites like NameBio and DNSalePrice to help decide how much I should offer when buying a domain name. Before placing an offer on an expensive domain it’s worth searching both of these sites (there are some sales I find in one database that aren’t in the other). For example, say you want to buy Decay.com. A quick search shows you that it sold for $12,000 last year. It’s probably not worth making an offer below that amount for the domain. On the other hand, if you were planning to offer $50,000 for the domain you might be able to do better.
If the domain hasn’t been sold in a publicly released transaction yet, you might find similar domain sales to help determine the domain’s value. For example, you may be interested in a domain name related to jobs. Searching for ‘jobs’ returns 43 domains, ranging from JobsPosted.org ($2) all the way up to Jobs.com ($800,000). Let’s say you’re looking at a particular type of jobs site, such as teachingjobs.com. A couple good comparisons would be BeautyJobs.com ($10,000) and TruckerJobs.com ($25,000). You would also see TeachingJobs.org at $2,288. A fair offer price is above $2,288 but could range to $25,000 or more.
Of course, comparable sales are only a piece of the overall picture that should be considered when valuing a domain.
