Mid-tier domain sales are often overlooked but are a treasure trove of information for domain investors.
Every week domainers go ga-ga over the big ticket sales: On.com for $635k, Bike.com for $500k, Blue.com for $500k, etc. But little notice is paid to domains that sell in the $1,000-$10,000 range. This is strange since most domainers don’t own great domains. Instead, they own “good” domains that will likely sell for no more than 4 figures.
4 figure domain sales are nothing to scoff at. Most of the domains I sell land in this $1,000-$10,000 range. Sales of these domains add up quickly.
Let’s review some recent sales at Afternic for under $10,000:
Adinteractive.com $2,000
PinkFashion.com $2,000
RegistrySmart.com $2,300
123456789.com $5,556
GreenSpot.com $3,388
PCFranchise.com $2,688
GoDirect.co.uk $2,100
SlotsPlus.com $2,500
TravelMine.com $2,000
While reviewing these names do you see anything that sticks out as “yeah, that’s worth a lot of money!”? Probably not. I could see many of these domains changing hands in a forum for a few hundred dollars, but they’ve managed to sell for at least $2,000. I personally troll DNforum and other sites for domains selling in the $100-$500 range. Frequently these domains sell for “reseller” or investor prices, but have potential to sell for many times that to the right person.
Here’s a tip. When DNJournal releases its weekly sales report tonight, skip the top 10 sales. Look for the reported sales under $10,000. These will probably be more informative when it comes to your domain portfolio decisions.
