Domain registrar GoDaddy just announced a special offer for free domain name Whois privacy. To take advantage of the offer you must register or transfer 3 or more domains (no limit).
Whois privacy services typically provide fat margins to registrars. GoDaddy’s normal fee is $8.95 per year–the same price as a domain registration. But competition is driving the price down. 1&1 offers free privacy with its $5.99 domains and iPowerWeb also offers free privacy.
Should you use domain privacy services? It reduces the amount of spam and telemarketer calls you get from people looking up your information in the Whois database. But it also prevents people from contacting you that you might want to talk to, such as someone wanting to buy your domain. Domain privacy is a temporary patch for the bigger problem of abuse of the Whois database. It’s not easy to file a complaint against someone for using the database. But you can find out when people have used the database by registering with a unique e-mail address. Whenever you receive mail to that address you’ll know the sender looked you up in Whois.
