It’s the Labor Day holiday in the U.S.
Today is Labor Day in the United States. The holiday originated in the late 1800s as a day of rest for working citizens. Since then it has morphed into a day of barbecue, beer, and “insane” furniture sales.
As I often like to do on holidays, I took at a peek at LaborDay.com to see who owns it. You might think that a labor union would own this domain to further its cause, but that would be a long shot. I wouldn’t plan on labor unions ever “getting it” when it comes to the web. After all, at the Democratic National Convention the Obama campaign trotted out a union auto worker to talk about how “the new economy just isn’t working”. Yeah, tell that to someone who makes his living online.
It turns out that the owners of GreetingCards.com own LaborDay.com and forward it to the section of its site with electronic greetings for labor day.
Of course the big story today isn’t Labor Day. It’s Hurricane Gustav, which made landfall this morning in the Gulf Coast. Preparations appear to be much better this time around, but it’s still not easy. It looks like Mississippi is being hit fairly hard. My wife’s extended family took it on the chin with Katrina and I hope Gustav isn’t as disastrous.
I came across a hurricane blog written by domainer Sigmund Solares of Intercosmos today. Apparently he and a few others are riding out the storm in their data center in New Orleans. The pictures are incredible. Good luck, guys.

This AM I caught the live internet stream from CNN. They had four different camera feeds.
