.TV advertising deal shares revenue with eNom resellers.
Demand Media is adding advertising to customers’ .TV channels, and eNom resellers will earn a portion of the revenues.
.TV channels are social networking tools offered to registrants of .TV domains. It’s all part of Demand Media’s goal of applying social networking to domain names. As owner of the world’s second largest registrar, Demand Media uses its eNom resellers to promote the domains.
Starting in a couple weeks, .TV registrants who activate their channels will be able to use Demand Media’s advertising network. Ads will show on their channels and they’ll earn money. eNom resellers will earn a share of the revenue their customers earn, so eNom is pushing resellers to encourage their customers to activate channels.
The .TV channel builder includes:
– a free website with customizable templates
– social networking features including blogs, forums, friends list, and more
– channel building tools to add videos, photo albums and widgets from other sites
Here’s an example of a .TV channel:
The advertising program will consist solely of graphical ads at first, although it might later include text and video ads. Most ads will be in standard sizes including 728×90, 160×600 and 300×250. Customers who choose to participate in the advertising program won’t be able to change the size or location of the ads.
At launch, the program will only be available to U.S. residents age 18 and over.

Ok… I have no problem with what they’re doing… hell, it’s business. But, my two favorite .tv names are UsedAuto.tv and UsedAutos.tv and I’m not trying to get a plug here because that is not my interest; however, I am worried. What happens when you take an entire extension and brand it towards something that maybe a generational fad- social networking? What happens to the investors and domainers who want to sell tangible goods or services on the .tv extension…. I like .tv but I feel like it is being cornered into an unstable and fickle market segmentation.
eq78 says
James then you have to host the site and built out a website on your own instead of using me.tv. I agree if every .tv uses ME.tv it will look stupid with no creativity at all. Check out a site (NOT MINE) like http://www.ifood.tv they are doing something cool without looking like ME.tv. Some people are doing some cool things with ME.tv like bloopers.tv
DCMike77 says
I think folks dismiss .tv simply for being ‘different.’ While I agree that a social network has the potential of becoming state, what other extention can say they have the the support and marketing capability of one of the biggest domain companies on the planet behind it?
It’s great to see this kind of effort by DemandMedia and I’m excited to see how this develops

If you don’t like the banner idea, then you aren’t forced to use it.
And, if your site is making sales over 5 a month, then it is silly to keep it on me.tv anyway. Sales will improve if you develop your own identity and not that of me.tv.
My question is simply this: What is the percentage, and how can I monitor it? If it all hidden and we simply get an email that says “Hey, you made .17 cents this month, thanks for participating.” Then I would take my business elsewhere.

Some good comments here. A couple points:
1. You can use your .tv site on almost any platform. No need to use Demand Media’s tools.
2. .TV is a relaunch. It has Demand Media’s $320M warchest behind it. But I don’t know if the ROI will ever be there for VeriSign and Demand Media. VeriSign’s initial launch of .TV failed miserably.
3. As for not providing the revenue share, that’s typical among the big ad networks (i.e. Google, Yahoo). People will see how much revenue they are getting and then decide to continue in the program (or not).

I think Demand Media is doing a wonderful job with me.tv and I am excited to see new tools and functions that are scheduled to be released. The new advertising option (i assume) will be a huge success, I’m excited to see it in action.
Again, people need to keep in mind, typical web sites can be *VERY expensive and time consuming to manufacture and maintain, so me.tv can be a huge asset! I believe when the world wakes up, (which it seems slowly but surely they are) they will realize the importance of being online and the value of domain names. Having a custom profile and a your own personal domain name in my opinion is worth the price, especially with the advertising options! Myspace who…?
Oh yea, I almost forgot to mention, how can you hesitate or question the potential future of a company/extension backed by Richard Rosenblatt and Demand Media? I believe .tv is about timing and proper marketing/education, and with time and energy, will be “THE” extension of the future. Some very big companies have already invested *big in the .tv space, so I believe the “boom” has already begun…setting the stage for the “new internet”.
So you have a choice, you can either jump on the train before it’s too late, or you can join the millions of “shoulda, coulda, woulda” people similiar to those that didn’t believe in the .com world!
I believe with time and technology advancements my vision will become a reality.

It’s very easy to question. In fact, it’s important to question. I think Rosenblatt can pull it off, but it’s silly to blindly accept that it will be a success just because he’s behind it.
NY says
Well, I understand your concern and questions, however I think the .tv extension itself will be a success, which will directly enhance and drive the me.tv network. I’m not assuming RR is magical, meaning if this were .ws or .name or some ridiculous extension it would be a totally different story and I would say “NO WAY”. However, it is .tv (meaning TV/VIDEO/MEDIA) on a global scale! With his experience, his support system, his funding, combined with the (potential of) “.tv”, thanks to the technological advances, I’m rolling the dice to say this is the best investment domain on the planet. Nothing happens overnight, it takes marketing, time, and most importantly acceptance/word of mouth. We would be foolish to anticipate an overnight boom with .tv I think you would agree, as some people are just now figuring out the value of domains in general.
Andrew says
Fair enough. I hope .TV is successful, as it will be good for the industry.
Incidentally, I’ve been sent several links from friends to .TV sites recently. Most of them are just an aggregation of YouTube videos, but some are more creative and really take advantage of .TV’s implied use.
NY says
Andrew, here are some .tv sites, I have nothing to do with, but I thought were cool. I’m sure you’ve seen or heard of some of these…nonetheless, I think slowly…people around the world are becoming more and more curious of domains and the future of the internet… (.tv) is a great place to start! Andrew, when is the advertising going to be available for us Canadians?
Andrew says
Len, good question. I suspect it will be next after the U.S. Give it a few months for Demand Media to get comfortable with where things are now.
