Today’s Wall Street Journal has a column about .com domain name registration data.
It features Dennis Forbes, who has run extensive research on the list of 47M registered .com domains. Dennis Forbes was able to acquire the entire list of 47M registered .com domains courtesy of Verisign, the .com registry. Forbes found some entertaining, allthough not very useful, data:
-Of the 1000 most common words in the English language, the word “consonant” is the least frequently used in .com domains, with only 42 domains.
-When you link the 300 most common first names and 300 most common last names, 89% of these domains are registered (e.g. firstlast.com). This could be useful if you had the list of unregistered matches.
-“Home” is the most commonly used word in .com domains, with 719,000 such domains. “Mortgage” is used in 114,700 domains.
-The word “sex” is used in 257,000 domains, which places this keyword 89th in usage.
-Half of all domains are between 9 and 15 characters long.
-550 domains are 63 characters long, the longest allowed.
-Each of the letters of the alphabet has a domain in which the letter is repeated 63 times (e.g. bbbbbb…..com)
The article is on B1 of the July 19 Wall Street Journal.
