Although year-over-year numbers look nice, it’s not a good comparison.
Top level domain name registry CentralNic (AIM: CNIC) reported results for the first half of the year today.
The company painted a rosy picture comparing the results to the first half of 2014 (revenue +171%, gross profit +125%), but that doesn’t really tell the story.
The best comparison for CentralNic’s numbers are the second half of 2014, since that’s when the company realized the full revenue and earnings from its Internet.bs acquisition. It also probably gained significant benefits in that half from new TLDs, such as .xyz.
Other than revenue, CentralNic’s numbers were all down half-over-half:
Internet.bs continues to perform well for CentralNic, with revenue of £1.7m in the first half of this year. That’s up 26% from the second half of 2014.
CentralNic has received a lot of attention lately as the registry provider for .xyz after Google announced it would use the domain name abc.xyz for its new Alphabet holding company.
Shares are trading down about 14% today at the time of this posting.
